Who We Are
Together with our partners, both public and private, Brick Capital endeavors to bring the best in housing, commercial and environment development and education to better the lives of those in our community that are the least well-endowed financially. Brick Capital is a HUD Housing Counseling Agency. Our Housing Counselor assists families with their housing needs including homeownership, foreclosure prevention and rental needs. Brick Capital's development staff secures financing and builds housing for persons with disabilities, victims of domestic violence and sexual assault. The management team keeps our housing save and affordable.
This challenging effort is ongoing and ever-changing, which is why Brick Capital, first and foremost, keeps its relationships with community residents, city, county and state staff, elected officials, for-profit and nonprofit organizations, educational entities and businesses open, engaging, and acting cooperatively for the common purpose.
What We Do
Brick Capital Community Development Corporation strives to increase wealth in low- and moderate-income families. Brick Capital Community Development Corporation is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) established in 1990 in Sanford, North Carolina. Brick Capital serves Lee, Chatham, Harnett and Moore Counties. Currently, nine board members oversee the functions of the organization. There are two Brick Capital staff members at the office on 403 West Makepeace Street, Sanford, North Carolina.
In 1990, the City of Sanford staff recognized that a private nonprofit entity could be a valuable partner to the municipality to increase housing stock, specifically for homeownership. In particular, the City staff grasped the opportunity to create a nonprofit with the help of community members and a Housing Demonstration (CDGB) grant. This information, when given to the City Aldermen, began the process of finding community leaders to participate in the formation of a new nonprofit, which was evenually named Brick Capital Community Development Corporation.
The initial target of the new nonprofit was the historically African–American neighborhood. In the 1970’s, City of Sanford's federally-funded urban renewal project demolished unsafe, unsanitary housing, which consisted primarily of rental housing. The neighborhood, now riddled with vacant lots and owned by the City, was prime for construction of new homes. From 1992 to 2009, Brick Capital developed 50 energy-efficient homes for families 80% and below county median income. The City of Sanford and Lee County dramatically benefited by the development of these homes through the increased tax base. The City no longer incurred the expense of maintaining the lots. In 2003 and 2010, Brick Capital developed supportive housing in partnership with the North Carolina Housing Finance Agency and the Federal Home Loan Bank of Atlanta. First, the Lee-Harnett Haven Housing (12 units), and then, the Lee-Harnett Haven II (6 units) were built for persons with disabilities and victims of domestic violence and sexual assault. Today, the organization owns and manages 22 units of supportive housing, 18 in Lee County and 4 in Chatham County. An additional Chatham County unit funding by North Carolina Housing Finance Agency is under construction. The Brick Capital Board of Directors enlisted staff to continue the development of this much needed housing for those people with disabilities in Moore, Harnett and Chatham Counties, as well as Lee.
Brick Capital partnered with HAVEN, an agency that provides services, including shelter, to victims of domestic violence and sexual assault. Brick Capital served as the developer, by financing and overseeing the construction of the new modern energy-efficient 29 bed shelter and offices for victims of domestic violence and their children.
